Gary Lawson

Gary covers campus-wide events, sports, faculty portraits and student life for University Marketing. His work appears in magazines, marketing publications, posters and other media for dozens of OSU entities, including OSU athletics' sports team posters.

Gary has been an OSU employee since 2007. An award-winning photojournalist, he is an OSU alum (Photojournalism, 1984) with more than two decades of experience behind the camera. He started his career in 1984 at the Stillwater NewsPress, joined the Tulsa Tribune in 1991, the Sand Springs Leader in 1993, the Paris (Texas) News in 1995 and the Times Record News in Wichita Falls in 1999, where he spent the bulk of his career.

Gary has won numerous awards from the National Press Photographers Association, the Associated Press, the Oklahoma Press Association, Texas Headliners Foundation and the Oklahoma College Public Relations Association.

As a freelancer, his work has appeared in the Los Angeles Times, the New York Times,Time Magazine and Sports Illustrated.


In addition to his overall skills in his medium, Gary is a skilled sports photographer with a knack for clicking the shutter at just the right moment. His work frequently appears in OSU student recruitment marketing efforts because of his keen eye for shooting student life on campus.


Gary lives in Wellston. He enjoys playing golf and spending time with his wife, Angel, and their daughter, Mattea.
